No, we don’t “help you talk”. I am so glad you clicked on this and wanted to know more. I myself had no idea what speech therapy was when I started. Every day in my life as a speech therapist I learn more about what I do and it is so incredibly vast and fascinating. And I decided I wanted to share this with everyone (clinicians, patients, families).
For me, being a speech therapist is about giving a voice to those who don’t have one, be it a baby crying in pain, a child with autism or an adult who suffered a stroke. It’s about quality of life; helping someone to enjoy mealtimes with their family or eat what they want.
Yes, speech therapy covers a lot (voice, swallowing, communication, cognition etc) but it all comes back to quality of life and what is important to the patients and their loved ones.
I got pulled into palliative care because I felt the importance of listening to those who cannot communicate their own needs and wants. I realized the massive amount of advocacy needed for this population and slowly realized that this is what is missing across many different populations.
Everyone deserves a voice. Everyone deserves a choice.
That is my mission.
